When it comes to blogging, readers are the blogger’s customer base, because its very survival depends on a stable readership. Unless your blog only serves as a personal diary, you should aim to inspire others with your writings. You’ll be surprised how your words can lift others up, or given them a great inspiration or help in certain area they need.

Yes, all you need to concern is not about how much advertising revenue you can gather, but how much value you can provide to your precious readers and keeps them coming back for more.

How do you provide values, or inspire readers with your blog? This subject is so broad that I don’t think I can draw conclusion if I quantify it to a list. However, I’ve identified 7 essential approaches to make your blog inspiring enough to sustain a fair amount of readership, under what I termed as I.N.S.P.I.R.E:

1. Independent

If you’re thinking of plagiarizing your entire entry from another source, don’t. First of all, it’s absolutely not right to copy-and-paste what others have taken the effort to write, even if you manage to paraphrase most of the sentences, think about branding and reputation.

Secondly, it won’t make your blog stand out from the large array of copycats out there on the net. If you want to distinguish your blog, you’ve got to offer your readers what other blogs couldn’t. By that, you got be original and independent. Be the pioneer.

Write what others didn’t think of. Offer something unique. Sure, you can get ideas by reading from other blogs, but don’t reproduce them. Digest what they have to say regarding a particular issue and come up with your own hypothesis, solution or whatever in your entry, as long as it’s your own words. You can even gain reputation mentioned above from being the blog that stands up to its own opinions or ways of writing.

2. Noteworthy

Ask yourself if the article that you are writing is noteworthy to the reader, or even to yourself. Is it something that many readers would be dying to read about and know, even bookmark, be it as a solution or an opinion-based entry?

Simply put, unique is not enough, you have to write something attractive, and by attractive I mean the reader will even come back to read again when they need to, or they will introduce the article when someone is asking about the recommendation, that’s called noteworthy.

To put an example, you want to do a Photoshop tutorial which the methods discussed are seen everywhere but they are all difficult to follow. In this case, you can produce an easy-to-follow tutorial, with comprehensive explanation on the go. So whenever readers came across it and they want to do a Photoshop tutorial later, they will remember that there’s a detailed yet easy-to-follow tutorial in your blog. They will also introduce it to any Photoshop beginner asking for the kind of tutorial. Noteworthy achieved.

3. Specialized

It is advisable for you to set a target audience for your blog. This is to ensure that your entries would stay within the boundary of a selected few topics.

For example, if your blog is about providing troubleshooting for common computer errors, then it would be common sense to input entries regarding the latest computer issue that is currently affecting many of your targeted readers.

Why such constraints? Think about it: If you as a reader wishes to find out more about a certain area of interest, would you prefer to go through the search engines and get bits and pieces of what you want, or would you rather have a one-stop website where you can browse through all the related topics and learn as you go? This is the best way to get readers to come back for more.

4. Personalized

This bears some similarity with being independent and original, except that this one is more to do with your style of writing.

In order to differentiate from hundreds of bloggers like yourself who are writing about the same topic, other than inputting different contents, the only other way is to personalize your writing. Develop a personality for your entries, so to speak.

However, humans are also creatures of habits, in that they will feel comfortable when they sense consistency. Hence, once you get a steady base of loyal readers, make sure to stick to your style. 5. Influential

The blog should be able to influence people with their words, which mean that it has to be persuasive in its writings. This is especially true for opinion or discussion blogs, where their primary business is to express a certain viewpoint and adopt a certain stance.

This doesn’t mean that the entries have to persuade people to adopt their views; the priority should be on generating a buzz or creating a discussion topic among people. Get everyone to discuss and make the blog lively.

In fact, it’s hard to be very influential if you are pushing everyone to a certain perspective in this modern and informational age. Rather, strive to be influential by making your blog entries stimulating and invigorative enough to draw a crowd and make them stay. Influence people by making them take notice of what you say.

6. Relatable

This is especially crucial for blog entries that touch on everyday issues, such as my earlier entry on tackling the 10 most asked interview questions. Since such entries address commonly encountered problems, making them relatable to the reader will forge a connection between your friendly words of advice and the person seeking it.

Even when your entry is of a more technical nature like troubleshooting, you can make it relatable to the readers by altering the tone of your writing a little. Crack a joke or complain a little about the error issue. Even posing a rhetorical question every now and then can set the reader into a more casual and relaxed reading mode.

7. Expertise

When it comes to the credibility of what the blogger has to say, nothing matters more than the expertise of the writer. How can a person who had never written a blog talk about, say, the qualities of a good blog? Be the top of your niche, as people only seek for expert’s advice.

To make the blog more reliable, what the writer has to do is to incorporate elements of his experience and expertise in the topic. The writer can draw on his or her knowledge to impress the readers and develop a level of trust on the subsequent entries. Thereafter, the readers would use the site as a reference point when they wish to consult on the topic.

In the heat of managing a blog, which includes everything from writing great content, to working with advertisers, to moderating comments, to promoting the site, one can overlook certain aspects of the site – from little things like broken links, to big ones like intrusive advertising and an overly crowded design.

Over time, as your site grows, you keep adding things – a banner here and there, a link section, some social media buttons, some graphics etc, which ultimately clog your site up and make it harder for your readers to figure out what’s what. Since you’re spending hours a day glaring at the site, you could probably navigate it blindfolded.

But that’s an entirely different story with your readers, especially the first timers coming to your site. What you see as simple, they might see the opposite. That’s why it’s important to take a step back once in a while and look at your blog objectively, from a distance, to catch out those pit holes which make your blog looks amateurish, and below are 7 practices that doom your blog’s professionalism, check them out!

1. Too many ads

Monetization is one of the cornerstones of any site, blog and web business, and is usually done in form of advertising banners and links. While you have every right to profit from your hard work, there is a fine line between earning income and squeezing every pixel on the page for ad revenue.

Not only is the practice of adding too many ads are confusing, annoying and disrespectful to your reader, it’s also detrimental to the ads you serve: most of the time your users will only click one ad, so if you have 10 ads, it means 9 of them are ignored. The more ads you have, the less impactful they have.

Tip(s): Experiment with different ad providers and ad positions, then select a few effective ads and place them well. This will usually result in better earnings and a more desired look than stuffing ads all over your site. Also, don’t use text ads that insert links into your content. At best, users have already learned how to avoid those, at worst, it’s frustrating, especially the ads that expand once you hover over them.

2. Intrusive ads

Intrusive ads are, among others, those banners that expand once your mouse passes over them, or those that flash like a Christmas tree. It’s the ads that auto play music and videos, and worst of all, the biggest no-no: pop-ups and pop-unders. Pop ups and pop unders have gotten such a bad reputation, and rightfully so, that any site that features them is immediately look down upon by the user.

Always remember that content is the reason the visitor got there in the first place, so you need to hang on to them. Annoy them too much, and they won’t come back, no matter how great your content is.

Tip(s): Don’t be annoying. Check what kind of companies advertise on your site, how their banners appear, and choose the displaying method that’s less annoying to the readers. And regarding pop-ups/ pop-unders: don’t do it. No matter how much you get paid per pop-up window, it’s annoying and most people close it before the ad even loads, it’s just harmful for long term.

3. Too many social media buttons

Sharing your content and letting others be aware of it should be a part of your routine. But there’s a limit on how many Twitter buttons you can cram on your site before it becomes annoying and distracting to readers. Always remember that everything is right to do until it makes reading content annoying.

Tip(s): Gather your social media/share buttons in one place on your site. On the sidebar, or above/under the posts. It’s a lot better than having a retweet button in one place, a Facebook share button on the other side of the page, etc.

Keep it simple. Disregard the fancy, glossy, grungy, large buttons. They won’t get you more Twitter followers than a regular, simple Twitter button. Also, position them right. Readers are much more likely to retweet your articles if the retweet button appears at the top of the page, rather than at the bottom.

4. Bad design/ Crowded design

When designing your site, you have a lot to consider, and the most important thing to strike is a good balance between site graphics, content, ads, etc. And the worst thing you can do is to make your site crowded with too many elements.

As soon as the users arrive to your site, the first thing they’ll be looking for is the content, and it’s your responsibility to ensure that the content is easily found, that the users’ eyes don’t have to scan through fancy graphics, social media buttons, banner ads etc., before they arrive at the destination. In short, don’t make it ugly for design and usability.

Tip(s): Understand that you won’t be able to fit everything on your site, especially if you want it “above the fold” (at the top part of the site, before any scrolling is done). Make sure that your main objective is to display your content in a readable way, then build the design around that notion.

It’s counterproductive to have a fancy, colorful header that distracts users, and/or pushes the content far down the page. No one ever bookmarked a website because it had a fancy header. Focus on content, and build everything around that.

5. Splash pages

When someone comes to your site, they usually came because they searched something, or someone posted a link that they thought was worthy of clicking. This is the most precious part to get them to come to your site, and when they’re finally there, the worst thing you can do is to block them from the content as soon as they arrive.

A splash page asking readers to subscribe to your RSS or to follow you on Twitter or give out their email address is not only a major turn off, it has a “scammy” feeling over it. A splash page blocking readers from accessing to your content because of their browser is even worse, most of them are innocent as they didn’t even know about the browser, and even they know, blocking access is a very bad move on gaining the visitor.

Tip(s): Don’t use splash pages, not matter how creative they are. It’s as simple as that. Not even a “Welcome” page to new readers. And don’t dare to ask for their email address, no matter how much you think they’ll enjoy your free eBook or whatever you might be offering.

6. Aggregating content from others

We’ve all been guilty of doing it at one point or another: when we don’t have any ideas or posts lined up, we “cheat” and aggregate content from others, a “daily news roundup” or something similar, unless your site is fully a content aggregator like Reddit.

There’s nothing wrong in doing this once or twice a week, sharing content that you appreciate, but these kinds of posts must never overshadow your own content. Remember that the content is king, and by content it means unique content.

Your readers are the ones who come because of your unique content, not the content you link from other sites. If readers start coming to your site because of the links you share, you’re in trouble, because those readers are easily lost to the next guy who can do a better “daily roundup”.

Tip(s): Limit “roundup” posts, like twice a week or once a week, and make sure the articles and links you include are the best you can find.

Essential Tips for Maintaining and Speeding Up WordPress

WordPress is one of the most popular and widely-used blogging platforms and CMSs (content management system). The reason is it’s easy to install and use, so you can focus on creating content rather than building and maintaining your website. Everything from small personal blogs to big digital magazines like Smashing use WordPress to run their sites. Chances are you’re using WordPress for your own site or are planning on using it. Well, although WordPress is fine out of the box, it’s not optimized – and worse, it can crash when you start getting more traffic. Lucky for you, this article brings you essential tips for maintaining and speeding up WordPress.

Using these simple and free tweaks and plugin installations, you can:

Maintain your WordPress site to be in tip-top error-free shape using automated methods so you don’t need to waste your precious time

Speed up your WordPress site so it not only loads faster but holds up to traffic spikes

Monitor your WordPress site so you’re aware when a problem pops up and how to quickly fix it

All of which will ultimately free up your time to focus more on creating content and great work, not wasting time fixing your site when it goes down. So without further ado, here are the essential tips for maintaining and speeding up WordPress…

1. Regularly backup your database

In case your WordPress-powered blog breaks or you need to reinstall WordPress. You’ll have all of your latest pages, posts and comments in a handy file. Automate this by using the WP-DBManager plugin. You can set it to regularly backup your database and save a file on your hosting or by emailing an attachment.

2. Optimize your database

Again, you can use the WP-DBManager plugin to automate this.

3. Regularly backup your WordPress files

This means your images and plugins. Automate this by using the WordPress Backup plugin. You can set it to regularly backup your WordPress files and email an attachment.

4. Reduce spam comments

Have Akismet plugin running and filtering out the spam comments. This will save you time by helping speed up comment moderation/reading/replying.

5. Make sure you don’t have unnecessary 404′s

This is when people try to access your pages and posts and get a 404 error message page instead. Use the 404 Notifier plugin to identify the 404 errors and fix them with redirection by using the Redirection plugin.

6. Switch to pretty permalinks

That is if you haven’t already. Go to Settings > Permalinks panel and choose a pretty permalink style (like “example.com/date/post-name/“). Like the URL style that Speckyboy here has, rather than the “/?p=X” permalink style that WordPress for some reason still insists on defaulting to. This not only helps with SEO (search engine optimization, since the keywords people would use to find your post will be right there in the URL) but with human readability. It becomes obvious what you’re going to read as well as making it easier to share.

7. Automate basic SEO (search engine optimization)

Install the All in One SEO Pack plugin. Add your title, keywords, and description in the plugin options screen. This will make it easier for people who are searching for what you have to find you.

1. Use caching

Install the WP Super Cache plugin and enable the Gzip option. This will load only the appropriate cached content to visitors rather than loading every single script and element of your WordPress site. Your bandwidth is greatly reduced and you avoid your site going down during traffic spikes (and if you’re making a kick-butt site with kick-butt content, you should expect them more often than not).

2. Reduce the CSS files to as few as possible

Combine multiple custom CSS files into one big one. The less individual CSS files the theme needs to read the faster it’ll load. Simply copy/paste the code from individual CSS files into the main style.css or a custom.css file in your theme.

3. Reduce the Javascript files to as few as possible

Combine multiple .js files into one big one. The less individual .js files the theme needs to read the faster it’ll load. You can copy/paste the code from individual Javascript files (/js/jquery.js, /js/jquery.slider.js, /js/jquery.tooltip.js) into a new single Javascript file (/js/jquery.js,jquery.slider.js,jquery.tooltip.js).

3. Put as much Javascript code as possible in the footer

In the footer.php file of your theme, or in the footer section in your theme’s customization panel if applicable. This is so that the Javscript calls load last. This way, your visitors will be able to quickly read the content while the Javascript loads in the background.

4. Use as few plugins as possible

The less plugins need to load the more stable your WordPress site can be (and slightly faster in certain cases if a plugin isn’t properly coded). Do that by seeing if you can copy/paste code or hand-code the functionality into your theme, or using a theme that has the functionality built-in, or having it designed or customized for you. This doesn’t mean don’t use any plugins, especially since this article is suggesting plugins for WordPress optimization – just stick to only the essential ones rather than random sidebar widgets and whatnot.

5. Speed up image loading

Use the Amazon S3 storage service to upload and host your files. The images will load faster and your visitors won’t have to wait as long for them to load – especially important for web and visual designers with lots of images and portfolios to showcase. You can use the Amazon S3 for WordPress plugin to streamline image uploading and inserting into your pages and posts.

1. See your basic hosting server info and WordPress PHP memory usage

Install the WP System Health plugin. This can let you see if there are memory issues so you can identify and fix the problem rather than blindly trying things when your WordPress site is slow.

2. See more detailed hosting server info

Install the Hosting Monitor plugin. This will let you know if slowness or any other performance issues are something to do with WordPress or your hosting, and you can fix it or contact your hosting accordingly.

3. Have any WordPress errors logged and notifications emailed

Install the Error Reporting plugin. Since you’ll be notified right when an error occurs, you can fix it right away.

By using these tweaks and installing these plugins, you’ll not only take your WordPress site’s performance and stability from merely okay to great, but you’ll automate a lot of it so that you don’t have to spend time maintaining your site. Not to mention you won’t have to waste time fixing and trying to get your WordPress site back up when it crashes from a traffic spike or whatnot.

All of which boils down to why you should even care about any of this in the first place: you free up time to focus on creating content and great work.
